As communicators and leaders

As communicators and leaders, we have to ensure our staff and colleagues don’t suddenly lose interest during conversations and important meetings.

We can usually see when this happens… Sometimes, it's a subtle shift in their body language. Something you said might be the trigger. Often, we use words unknowingly that can harm our listeners. By being mindful of our language, we can enhance communication and avoid misunderstandings. So how do we avoid this?

I always try to use positive words. According to research, there are two main culprits that we can aim to eliminate in our communications: "But…" and "I'll try…" While banning "but" might be extreme, using it cautiously is smart. "But" can contradict or negate preceding statements, making the listener feel dismissed. Swapping "but" with "and" maintains positivity. For example, say, "I appreciate your hard work, and let's talk about how we can improve on that." “I’ll try” suggests a lack of commitment or confidence. Replace it with "I will" for decisiveness and accountability. Using decisive language motivates and sets clear expectations.

Being aware of these subtle words can make a difference. Try it!
