Navigating today’s workplace is tough enough without the added frustration of corporate jargon.

Navigating today’s workplace is tough enough without the added frustration of corporate jargon. Amid mass layoffs, return-to-office mandates and endless notifications, jargon like “circle back” and “build the plane as we fly it” only adds confusion and dilutes your message. Glassdoor recently polled professionals to find the most irritating workplace jargon, and the verdict is clear: these overused phrases aren’t just annoying—they can actually undermine effective communication.

Relying on jargon can make you seem vague and evasive, causing your point to get lost and leaving your colleagues and employees wondering what you really mean. It can also damage your credibility, making you come across as less authoritative and more like you’re trying to hide behind buzzwords.

If you want to convey your ideas clearly and assertively, it’s best to ditch the jargon and speak plainly. In a world where clear communication is key, using direct language shows you’re confident and trustworthy—qualities that help build, not break, your authority in the workplace.

Which phrase/word sets your hair on fire? I think 'lean in' is ridiculous!
